The Alex Job Racing McKenna Porsche team set the quickest GT practice times during the opening session for Sunday's American Le Mans Series race at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Timo Bernhard was fastest of the team's four German drivers, covering the 2.53-mile road course in one minute 38.195 seconds in the No. 22 Porsche 911 GT3 RS he shares with Jörg Bergmeister. Lucas Luhr was second in the No. 23 Porsche (1:38.978) that he drives with Sascha Maassen.
"The track is nice, I think it has improved compared to last year, especially the last section with the new pavement," Bernhard said. "The new track is good fun and the car was good, so no problems. For tomorrow, I think it's good."
Maassen was also pleased. "The car is quite good," he said. "Of course, you have to improve the car - the track has changed and we have to adjust to that, and there was a little bit of oil on the track. Let's see what qualifying brings, but I'm very, very optimistic."
Almost everyone on the Alex Job Racing McKenna Porsche crew is a racer. The team members compete individually in a host of auto-racing series, and they also compete as a team in karts. They recently completed a 24-hour kart race in Ocala, Fla.
"I believe one of the key factors for the depth of the AJR team is the fact that virtually everybody on the team competes in motorsports, most in a driver role, so they are able to relate to the drivers' input and the preparation of the car," said team owner Alex Job. "It's much easier to relate when you actually do it yourself."
The Alex Job Racing transporter carries everything necessary to prepare for a race away from the race shop. The transporter is designed to allow inside work on the underside of the race cars and it is equipped with a small machine-shop so the crew can fabricate components on the road. A portable sink provides hot and cold running water.
