The Racer'S Group finishes in the top five at the Audi Presents Petit Le Mans.
BRASELTON, Ga.-- Oct. 12, 2002-- Kevin Buckler and co-drivers Brian Cunningham and Michael Schrom overcame a few difficulties in today's Audi Presents Petit Le Mans to take The Racer's Group No. 66 Porsche GT3 RS to a fifth class finish, completing 330 laps at the 1,000 mile American Le Mans Series endurance race. This is only the second time the team hasn't finished on the podium this season.
Buckler started No. 66 eighth on the grid and took the car to third position during his first stint. The team lost a lap during the first pit stop, bringing the team to seventh position in class. Driving consistent lap times, the team brought No. 66 to a strong fifth, battling with the No. 43 Orbit Porsche for fourth position. The two cars continued the battle until a shock failure caused Buckler to bring the racing machine into the pits. The combination of a brake, shock and alternator change cost the team two positions. Despite the less than perfect conditions, the team fulfilled its goal and brought the car home in one piece.
This race marks the end of the 2002 American Le Mans Series season and places Buckler third in the driver championship points and clinches his Porsche World Cup Champion title. This year has been a dream season for the team with two class wins and six podium finishes in ALMS as well as a class win in each the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In addition, The Racer's Group had two class wins in the Grand American Road Racing Series.
"Three small gremlins kept us off the podium today, but overall the car ran really well and we persevered in adverse conditions. I'm proud of my co-drivers and the crew. I'm happy that we finished the way we did. It really has been an amazing season," Buckler said.
"I think we had the best results we could expect. We had consistent and fast lap times and stuck it out. We were able to pick out a few cars and finish well. I'm happy to help Kevin to third in the driver points," Cunningham said.
We tried as hard as we could, but came up against some unavoidable difficulties. We were up against the best drivers and cars in the world this weekend," Schrom said.
