Ginetta-Zytek Proves Highly Competitive First Time Out
Team LNT's new LMP1 car takes on the ALMS regulars
A brand new Ginetta-Zytek 07S has made an impressive competition debut today in practice for Saturday's Petit Le Mans race, near Atlanta, Georgia. Entered by 2006 Le Mans GT2 winner Team LNT, the car is powered by the first example of Zytek's new 4.5-litre engine, the ZJ. The drivers are Englishman Danny Watts, who raced a Team LNT LMP2 Zytek late last year, running as high as third overall at one point in the Silverstone 1,000km and newcomer to Zytek, Frenchman Olivier Pla who has carried out much of the testing of the new car at Snetterton. Indy Car team Conquest Racing is providing support for the English team at the Road Atlanta track.
The Team LNT car has been described as one of the revelations of the week. In its first ever timed practice session it was fourth overall and third in class with a time of 1m 08.047s, driver Olivier Pla beating many of the top American Le Mans Series regulars. The afternoon session saw Olivier set a time of 1m 08.108 which was good for seventh, although at one point in the session Danny had headed the time sheets. "The new Zytek is easy on the tyres and we're getting a really good grip," says Danny. During night time practice the pair maintained their pace, being again placed seventh with a time of 1m08.699s.
This is the first time that either Olivier or Danny has raced an LMP1 car. They have already gelled, in their own words, as "an excellent partnership" and Danny remarks that their share common feelings on the set up of the car. He also points to how well the Team LNT, Conquest Racing and Zytek Engineering personnel are working together.
This is also the first time that two Zyteks have raced together in the LMP1 class. Corsa Motorsport has also entered its 07S for the first time with former Grand Prix driver Stephan Johansson joining Johnny Mowlem and Gunnar Jeanette. Having had to miss the first practice session, the team came out to record 14th fastest overall and sixth in class during the afternoon with a time of 1m09.956s. In the evening the team recorded a 17th fastest time of 1m 11.869s.
