Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta Notes of Interest
Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga., will welcome the stars and cars of the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta June 27-29. The weekend will feature a two-hour, 45-minute event for the American Le Mans Series at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 29.
The weekend schedule will also include practice and qualifying on both Friday and Saturday, along with several other support series races. Support series include the SPEED World Challenge, Star Mazda Series and the Panoz GT Pro Series.
Road Atlanta will also host the season finale for the American Le Mans Series, the sixth annual Petit Le Mans Oct. 15-18. The track is currently offering a special, discounted "Two Event Ticket," as well as separate tickets to both events. ** FREE CONCERT SATURDAY NIGHT -- Recording artist Jimmy LaFave will perform a concert at Road Atlanta on Saturday, June 28, at 6 p.m. The concert will be free to Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta ticket holders courtesy of Hyper Sport and will take place on the Hyper Sport Stage in the Vendor Village area of the Road Atlanta infield.
Folk rock artist LaFave has been recording and performing since the early 1980s and has released six CDs during his career. Though born in Texas, LaFave lived a great deal of his early years in Oklahoma. He has strong musical ties to the state and often refers to his "red dirt music." He now lives in Austin, Tex.
** HAWAIIAN TROPIC MODEL SEARCH SET FOR ROAD ATLANTA -- Hawaiian Tropic, one of the sponsors of the American Le Mans Series, will hold a two-day model search at Road Atlanta as part of the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta weekend June 27-29.
More than 30 contestants are expected to take part in the preliminary competition on Saturday, June 28, at 1 p.m. on the Hyper Sport Stage in the Vendor Village area of the Road Atlanta infield. The finals will be held on Sunday, June 29, at 1:30 p.m.
Hawaiian Tropic, which has had a presence at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for 25 years, joined the American Le Mans Series in 2001, bringing another popular tradition of the world's most famous endurance race to the series that bears its name.
Hawaiian Tropic's promotional models attend every American Le Mans Series event as goodwill ambassadors, participating in such pre-race activities as starting grid ceremonies and the driver autograph session. The models also roam the paddock area to interact with fans and race teams.
** MAZDA EXTREME STREET AT ROAD ATLANTA -- Mazda Extreme Street, a national sport compact/import car show that tours with the American Le Mans Series and the SPEED World Challenge, will be at Road Atlanta on Sunday, June 29, with the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta.
Sport and import car enthusiasts will have the opportunity to win $2,500 in cash awards as well as trophies and giveaways. The Mazda Extreme Street has been steadily growing since being introduced in 2001 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California.

** AIR FORCE JETS TO HELP START RACE -- A pair of US Air Force reserve Command A-10A Thunderbolt II Attack aircraft will do a flyover prior to the 3 p.m. start of the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta on Sunday, June 29.
The two aircraft are from the 926th Fighter Wing, with the unit based at the Naval Joint Reserve Base in New Orleans.
The Thunderbolt II is the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. They are simple and effective twin-engined jet aircraft that can be used against all ground targets, including tanks and other armored vehicles.
** OLIVE GARDEN FERRARI AT WORLD OF COCA-COLA -- The Team Olive Garden Ferrari and its drivers will appear at World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta on Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Olive Garden and Coca-Cola, sponsors of the Gabriele Rafanelli-owned race team, are also teaming up for the appearance.
Drivers Mimmo Schiattarella and Emanuele Naspetti will sign autographs for race fans, and the team's Ferrari 550 Maranello American Le Mans Series race car will be on display. Discount coupons for Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta admission tickets will be available, as will Coca-Cola and Olive Garden giveaways.
Located in a three-story pavilion adjacent to Underground Atlanta, World of Coca-Cola encompasses the rich history and progress of the beverage that was created in Atlanta more than 110 years ago. The attraction is at 55 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
