Law Teams With Flying Lizards to Finish 3rd at Petit Le Mans
Porsche road racing ace Darren Law teamed with the #45 eSilicon, ShoreTel Flying Lizard Porsche GT3 RSR squad at this past weekend's American Le Mans Series Petit Le Mans, and came away with an impressive third place finish in the 1,000 mile endurance contest. Law, of Phoenix, Arizona was an integral part of the #45 team throughout the 2004 season, and although he currently races with the Alex Job Racing team, Law returned to join teammates Johannes van Overbeek and John Fogarty, both of San Francisco, for the Petit Le Mans event in the Lizard entry. With a competitive 5th place LMGT2 class qualifying run at a time of 1:22.829 around the 2.54 mile challenging and elevation filled Road Atlanta circuit, the #45 Flying Lizard squad took to the pre race grid on Saturday morning with optimism for the day's event. This year's Petit Le Mans marked the 9th and penultimate round of the 2005 American Le Mans Series, and the 30 car combined class field took the green flag Saturday morning amidst clear and dry conditions.
The 394-lap race took 9 hours and 16 minutes to complete, with only 7 caution periods over the course of a fantastic event. The silver and black Flying Lizard Porsche spent much of the race in the top three, and ran as high as second for a period until a long pit stop to change the front struts dropped the team to their final finishing position of 3rd in the LMGT2 class and 13th overall. The #45 car ran some 356 laps for a total of 904 miles, and ran a quick lap of 1:24.352 during the event.
Law drove two separate stints during the race, and was especially happy with the car during his second outing. The Law, van Overbeek, Fogarty trio made a formidable driver lineup, and the team's consistent strong run belies the fact that it is only in its second year of competition in the ALMS. "I really enjoy racing with this team", said Law following the race. "The Lizards are a top notch organization, and I think our overall performance showed that today. The car was very strong on my second stint, and I was able to put my head down and drive hard. I think we ended up putting together a string of strong laps, and even though it would have been nice to finish higher, I'm very happy with our result today."
Law will be back with the Alex Job Racing team in the #24 entry at the final race of the 2005 ALMS calendar the weekend of October 10-13 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
