Ende, Lally Take Top-Five at Road America
Elkhart Lake, WI (August 23, 2010)- After an event filled weekend through the famous rolling hills of Wisconsin, TRG finished the day with a fifth place during Sunday's American Le Mans Series powered by Estar, the eighth round of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron.
Returning to the team for the first time since his Sebring debut, driver Duncan Ende started the two-hour and 45-minute sprint race, replacing full-time driver Henri Richard who had business conflicts for the Elkhart Lake round. Unfortunately, Ende had to start his Freescale Semiconductor/Future Electronics/Green Hills Software/LifeStudio by Hitachi/Racer's Roast Coffee Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car from the back due to an uncharacteristic accident in qualifying by teammate Andy Lally, forcing the team to make repairs over night. Making steady progress at the start of the race moving through the field, Ende had a small spin at the famed Canada corner, beaching him in the gravel and losing valuable time as he waited for track officials to tow him out.
Once back on track, Ende continued with a flawless stint and set down several fast race laps before handing the car over to Lally.
"The guys did a great job repairing the car overnight," stated Ende. "I knew it would be a challenge starting from the back, but the car was fast enough to move up and I was just trying to keep up solid lap times. Unfortunately, the car had been a little loose all weekend and I just lost the back end under braking, and I ended up getting stuck in the gravel. It's a shame because I think we could have been a real contender this weekend."
Teammate Andy Lally confirmed the car to be extremely fast, setting some of the fastest times of the weekend, and slowly making up lost ground. Being a sprint race, the team simply ran out of time to make up major ground, but took some solace with a top-five.
"We really had a fast car this weekend," stated Lally. "In qualifying we had a good shot at pole until the accident. The guys did an extremely good job at getting it ready for the race, and as soon as I strapped in, I knew we had a fast car. We have a great group here and I think we can make a strong finish with Henri at Mosport and Petit."
For Team Owner Kevin Buckler, there were many positives from the weekend, particularly heading in to the final two rounds of the series.
"I believe this weekend is great proof of our overall speed and quality of crew," stated Buckler. "To have to repair the car like that overnight is unbelievable, and the guys did a great job. To be the fastest car in the morning warmup was really a big lift. Duncan was solid all weekend save for his one small spin, and Andy drove solid except for our qualifying off so we just had some bad luck. The bottom line is we had probably the fastest car all weekend, so we'll head in to the final two races knowing we're strong contenders. We really look forward to returning with Henri at Mosport, and having Henri, Duncan, and Andy at Petit will put us in a great position."
Round eight of The American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron will take place at the Grand Prix of Mosport on Sunday, August 29.
