fourth podium

Terry Borcheller earned his fourth American Le Mans Series podium of the season with a third-place GTS finish at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway, but the race didn't end the way the team wanted.

Borcheller, of Gainesville, Ga., qualified the No. 63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R third in the GTS class with a lap time of one minute 10.912 seconds on the 1.944-mile road course - less than a second behind the record class pole position time. He drove the first stint of the two-hour 45-minute race and held third in class. Johnny Mowlem of London, England, drove the second stint, starting at 1h7. He had contact with the second-place GTS Corvette and spun at 2h1, then moved up to second a few minutes later when the Corvette was penalized. Mowlem dropped back to third at 2h15, when he pitted for a rear vibration in the car. He then drove a few cautious laps, but returned to pit lane when the problem continued. The team finished the race in pit lane.

"I had an uneventful stint. I ran consistent laps and we had a perfect pitstop," Borcheller said. "Things were still looking good until we had another surprising mechanical issue with the axles. They were brand-new at the start of the race, so everyone is a little frustrated. It's never been a problem throughout the '01and '02 seasons for me, and now two races in a row. I'm confident the problem will be resolved for Mosport; we have a great group who are very resourceful."

Borcheller has a busy week ahead with testing and races in two countries. He will test the No. 63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont., on Aug. 3, then participate in a test day at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, on Aug. 5, driving both the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Doran JE4 and the No. 11 Powell Motorsport Cadillac CTS-V. He will return to Mosport on Aug. 6 for an American Le Mans Series practice in the Saleen, back to Mid-Ohio on Aug. 7 to drive the Doran in a Rolex Sports Car Series race, then back to Mosport on Aug. 8 for an American Le Mans Series race.
