ACEMCO Racing Qualifies Third in GTS at Portland
Portland, Oregon - ACEMCO Motorsports driver Terry Borcheller qualified the number 63 ACEMCO Motorsports/Saleen S7-R in third position in the GTS class for round five of the American Le Mans Series race to be run at Portland Raceway tomorrow.
Portland is having a heat wave, temperatures at qualifying time were reading 107 degrees. The extremely hot weather causes the tire temperature to rise creating a greasy effect on the track. The temperature in the car can be as much as 30 degrees hotter than it is outside, the drivers are relying heavily on their cool suits.
Terry was selected to qualify the S7-R today and posted a time of 1:10.912 and a speed of 99 mph. "Our team has done a great job dealing with the heat. We are very close to the Corvettes. After ten laps we are loosing our tires, the heat is creating more slide with the only solution being to slow down, it is a downward spiral once that happens. The car was a little nervous under braking in qualifying and I was almost locking up the rears. The team will make the necessary adjustments for the morning warm-up,"
Teammate Johnny Mowlem said, "I am looking forward to a really great race. We hope the temperatures are lower tomorrow to improve the lateral grip. Portland is all about taking care of your tires. The surface here is quite old and it eats up the rubber. Terry and I will have to really be careful not to slide the car too much in the race"
"This was our closest qualifying margin to the Corvette, but we are still behind them in third position," said Jeff Giangrande, team owner. "Our race strategy will be to take care of the tires and race from third. I am hoping we can stay close enough to the GM cars to pressure them into a mistake."
The July 25th race at Portland Raceway will be televised live on Speed Channel starting at 4:00 p.m. Eastern.
