BRASELTON, Georgia - September 24, 2004 - A new search for lifestyle images from the American Le Mans Series has spawned a photo contest - The Smiley Awards - to be hosted by mail2web.com, the web site on which people can check their e-mail from anywhere in the world.
The contest will start at this weekend's Petit Le Mans event at Road Atlanta, with fans and professional photographers alike encouraged to submit images of anything at the circuit except for race cars or the track itself. And fans will vote online to determine the winner - one vote per person per day.
"We want to show the activity and human side of life at a race weekend," said Tony Yustein, CEO of Softcom Technology Consulting, Inc., the company which operates mail2web.com.
"As an official sponsor of Porsche Motorsport, we have observed the action behind the scenes at an ALMS race, and know that the fans would jump at the chance to use their digital cameras to share images with everyone. We envision photos of drivers, teams, pit crews, and fan activity will be submitted," said Yustein.
Fans can log onto www.smileyawards.com to get a copy of the rules and follow the steps to upload their photos, and to vote.
The contest starts tomorrow, Friday, September 24, at Road Atlanta, and closes on Saturday, October 16 after the race is finished at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway. The winner will be announced shortly after that deadline, with the grand prize being an i- mate GSM/GPRS Pocket PC Mobile Phone Edition. Second prize is a Sony Cybershot DSC- W1, and third prize is a 1 GB Memory (either compact flash or Sony Memory Stick). All photos must be taken on the grounds of the race track on race weekend.
Some of the rules include a requirement that the entrant be 18 years or older, limit the entries to five images per venue, and that professionals are welcome to enter as long as they abide by all the rules, which includes handing over all rights to mail2web.com. A full set of rules is posted on www.smileyawards.com.
