20 Car Diary, 0800, Saturday
It's race day for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring -- the 56th running of America's premier sportscar race.
For the fourth time, we're following the fortunes of the No. 20 Thetford/Norcold Dyson Racing Team Porsche RS Spyder -- known for the remainder of the day as the 20 Car.
Butch Leitzinger, making his 17th Sebring start, will be the lead driver, followed by Marino Franchitti and Andy Lally, who co-drove the 20 with Leitzinger in 2007 -- the first outing for the RS Spyder in Dyson livery.
"Actually we've had a very good off season right up into right now," says Leitzinger. "We had a couple of good tests down here. We learned a lot more about the car. This week, the whole week has really gone very well. We've been at the sharp end for every session.
"Marino and Andy have slotted right in and done an excellent job. You know, this is probably one of the most heart-breaking races there is out there. So you never like to fool yourself too much, but I think we're as prepared as we've ever been here."
Lally confirmed Leitzinger's assessment: "This car has made, I think, pretty big gains from Monday to Friday. I think Saturday here we've got a really good piece. Really looking forward to this. Just trying to keep it in one piece, because we know it's fast. Maybe with that little bit of rain last night we might have to tweak a little bit, but I imagine we're probably just going to leave it alone and let the track come back to us."
Following the morning warm-up, Lally confirmed: "Right now, the rubber's gone and so is a lot of the grip. But it should come back."
Air time on SPEED is 0930 with the race running from 1000 to 2000 -- that's 10 to 10 for you non-military types.
A 20 Car Diary entry will be posted here following each pit stop.
