American Le Mans Series Round 2 of 9

The weekend marks the return of the American Le Mans Series to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. In addition to this event, Mid-Ohio will host SCCA SPEED World Challenge, Star Mazda, Panoz Racing Series, Pro Miata, and Formula Ford 2000 Zetec.

RACE LENGTH: Two hours, 45 minutes (timed event)

COURSE: 2.25-mile, 13-turn permanent road course

Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP1)
Features closed-wheel, purpose-built racing chassis and 6.0 liter normally aspirated or 4.0 liter turbocharged engines. Cars may include the Audi R8s, Riley Technologies, Dallara, Lotus, and Lola. Minimum weight must be 900 kilograms (1,980 lbs). Capable of reaching speeds over 200 MPH and generates 750-800 horsepower. LMP1 cars feature red race positioning lights and red numbers.

Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2)
As "little brother" to the larger LMP 1, the LMP 2 is smaller and less powerful. Minimum weight is 750 kilograms (1,653 lbs) and the horsepower capacity is between 550-600. Common manufacturers include Lola, Riley Technologies, and Pilbeam. LMP2 cars feature blue race positioning lights and blue numbers.

Grand Touring Sport (GTS)
The GTS class is comprised of production-based, two-wheel drive highly modified cars. Cars such as Corvette, Ferrari 550 or 575 Marenello, Viper, Saleen, and Lamborghini produce horsepower ranging from 550-600 and reach speeds between 180-195 mph. GTS cars feature green race positioning lights and green numbers.

Grand Touring (GT)
GT cars are production-based, that are only slightly modified. These cars include Lamborghini, BMW, Porsche, and the Ferrari Modena 360. When reaching speeds between 170-180 mph, they are producing more than 450 horsepower. The GT cars feature yellow race positioning lights and yellow numbers.


Sports Car Club of America SPEED World Challenge

GT Race: Saturday June 26, 2004 4:40 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. (50 minutes timed)
GTS Race: Sunday June 27, 2004 10:10 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (50 minutes timed)

The SCCA SPEED World Challenge consists of two separate classes, the GT class and the Touring class. The GT cars are permitted to have aftermarket body kits and wings. Cars include Porsche, Audi RS 6, Corvette Z06, Saleen SR 351, BMW M3, Viper Competition Coupes, and Cadillac CTS-V.

The Touring class allows naturally aspirated engines that are no larger than 2.8 liters, aftermarket wings, and 17" rims. Touring class cars must come in production form and have a back seat. Cars include Hondas, Acuras, small BMWs, Lexuses, Nissans, Ford SVT Focus, and Mercedes-Benz.

Star Mazda Series
Saturday, June 26 3:35 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. (45 minute timed race)

In the Star Mazda Series every racer receives the same car. The Formula Mazda is a Carbon fiber composite, 1090 lbs., 240 horsepower, open wheel race car. The engine is a 13b "Renesis" rotary engine that is rev limited to 6,800 rpm and equipped with a rev limiter, traction control, and a pit speed limiter. A driver has the opportunity to adjust his car's shocks (two way), anti-sway bars, wing angles, and brake bias (cockpit controlled).

Panoz Racing Series
Sunday, June 27, 2004 4:15 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (45 minute timed race)

Panoz Racing Series, the official race series of the American Le Mans Series, is competing at Mid-Ohio for the first time. Panoz drivers compete in identically prepared Panoz GT and GTS cars. Both classes race simultaneously with a winner crowned in each class.

Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship
Saturday, June 26, 2004 Race 1 12:30 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. (30 minute timed race)
Sunday, June 27, 2004 Race 2 9:20 a.m. - 9:50 a.m. (30 minute timed race)

The Formula Ford 2000 gives younger racers the opportunity to showcase their skills and get used to open wheeled racing. All cars are powered by a 2.0 liter Ford Zetec Engine with a minimum weight of 1,175 lbs (including driver).

Mazdaspeed Miata Cup
Sunday, June 27, 2004 11:20 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.

One of the most popular and fastest growing spec series is the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup, featuring the Miata first generation body style with minor performance modifications.
