RAHAL LETTERMAN RACING ALMS SQUAD HEADS NORTH IN SEARCH OF VICTORY
HILLIARD, Ohio - The first-year Rahal Letterman Racing squad competing in the American Le Mans Series GT2 class is hitting its stride as the season reaches its final stages, having scored podium finishes in two of its last three starts. The duo of Ralf Kelleners and Tom Milner came from the back to the front two weeks ago at Road America, using timely pit strategy and strong driving to snare a second-place finish. At this weekend's Mobil 1 Grand Prix of Mosport, the duo will look to get up front and stay there as they continue to close in on the team's first victory.
This weekend's trip to the Great White North is the ninth stop on the 12-race ALMS schedule for 2007 and takes the squad to Canada for the first time this year. The 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course is a staple of the ALMS and is one of just four tracks (Sebring, Road Atlanta, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca) to be part of every ALMS season since its inception in 1999.
Rich in racing heritage, Mosport has played host to nearly every major racing series in the world since Sir Stirling Moss won the first major event there in 1961. The mix of high-speed corners and tricky hairpins makes it a unique challenge for drivers of all types.
"Mosport is one of my favorite tracks. It has lots of fast corners which seem to suit me well and the last three corners really requires a good rhythm to get it right," said Milner, who competed there last year for the first time. "Mosport is one of those tracks that you enjoy driving no matter what kind of car you're in. I'm looking forward to driving the Porsche there this year. We're coming off yet another weekend where we had a strong car and a strong finish and, as usual, the guys at RLR are working hard on making the car faster."
Milner has the most recent Mosport experience, having run 14th there a year ago, partnering with Gunnar Jeanette, but Kelleners has three previous starts on the Canadian track in ALMS competition including the 1999 event that served as his series debut. His most recent run came in 2004 in the Risi Ferrari where he finished fourth. He was the runner-up in the GT class in 2003 and ran sixth in 1999 in his aforementioned ALMS debut.
"I really enjoy Mosport, it's a very quick track and very fluid. It is a place where, if you can find a rhythm, you can really turn some good laps. I have had strong runs there in the past and I look forward to another one in the Bell Micro Rahal Letterman Racing Porsche this weekend!"
The driver duo of Kelleners and Milner vaulted all the way into fourth place in the GT2 class pilot points after their podium run at Elkhart Lake, which paid more points than usual due to the four-hour race length. They are just 20 points behind the third-placed pairing of Wolf Henzler and Robin Liddell with four races to run. The podium run at Road America marked the first time this season that RLR finished as the race leader among the Porsche contingent. The team is currently fifth in owner's points, just 12 markers behind the Petersen White Lightning team with Henzler and Liddell at the wheel.
This weekend's race takes place on Sunday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. The race can be seen live on SPEED with broadcast coverage of the 165-minute race beginning at 3 p.m.
