DUMAS SMASHES LMP2 TRACK RECORD AS PENSKE PORSCHES TAKE TOP TWO CLASS GRID POSITIONS FOR SUNDAY ALMS RACE IN CANADA; WOLF HENZLER/TAFEL TOP PORSCHE IN GT2
Romain Dumas (France) captured the LMP2 pole and a spot on the front row of the overall grid in his #7 Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder by slicing more than two seconds off the qualifying record for tomorrow's Mobil 1 Presents the Mosport Grand Prix.
The Mosport Grand Prix will get the green flag on Sunday, August 26, at 3:00 PM Eastern Daylight time, and will be telecast live on the SPEED Channel. Race fans can also track the activity from Mosport with American Le Mans Series live timing and scoring as well as audio commentary at www.americanlemans.com. Both www.porschemotorsport.com and www.americanlemans.com will have results and photos.
Dumas, who was just one-tenth of a second off the overall pole turned by the more powerful Audi LMP1, said that he did his best driving over several different laps; nevertheless, he was pleased with his class pole position.
"Our focus continues to be the march to the class championship. Our class rivals Acura, Mazda and the Dyson Porsche team are all within a second or two of our cars, so we cannot worry about LMP1 times," said Dumas, who leads the LMP2 championship points standings with his co-driver Timo Bernhard (Germany).
"You only use the brakes four or five times around Mosport, so any little mistake can cost you a couple of tenths of a second. I did my best corners on different laps during qualifying, so it might have been possible to pick up another tenth or two," he said.
It was Dumas' third pole of the season (plus a #1 starting position at Lime Rock after being fastest in practice when qualifying was rained out), while teammate Bernhard has two poles to his credit.
Second in LMP2 and fourth overall was the #6 Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder of Sascha Maassen/Ryan Briscoe, with Briscoe qualifying the car just ahead of the first of the Acura LMP2 prototypes. The Dyson Racing Porsche RS Spyders were close behind the Acuras, with the #16 Butch Leitzinger (USA)/Andy Wallace (UK) Porsche sitting sixth on the LMP2 grid, and the #20 Chris Dyson (USA)/Guy Smith (UK) Porsche qualifying seventh.
In GT2, the three Ferraris took the top three grid positions, with the #71 Tafel Racing Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Wolf Henzler (Germany)/Robin Liddell (UK) the first of the Porsches in fourth place. The #45 Flying Lizard Porsche of Jorg Bergmeister/Johannes van Overbeek will start fifth, with the Rahal Letterman Racing Porsche of Tom Milner/Ralf Kelleners sixth.
