MOWLEM, ACEMCO TEAM GIVE STRONG PERFORMANCE AT MOSPORT
MOSPORT, Ontario, Canada (Sept. 5, 2005) -- Johnny Mowlem and his ACEMCO Motorsports teammates had one of their best days as a team in the Grand Prix of Mosport at Mosport International Raceway. The race was part of the 2005 American Le Mans Series campaign.
The ACEMCO team's Saleen S7R competes in the GT1 class for production-based sports cars. The ACEMCO team started at the front of the GT1 class as Terry Borcheller, Mowlem's co-driver, led from the pole for the first hour of the race.
Then Mowlem took over for the next hour, continuing to lap amongst the fastest speeds in the class to keep both of the factory Corvettes at arms length, maintaining a six second lead to the final splash-and-go pitstop where they switched drivers for the final stint again. Unfortunately, due to a slightly lower fuel consumption, both Corvettes needed less fuel at their final stop and both jumped the ACEMCO Saleen, which went on to finish third in the GT1 class and eighth overall.
"The team asked me about three-quarters of the way through my stint whether I could stay in to the end for the final 30 minute stint, but I was so hot that I thought it was better to put Terry back in fresh and he could charge to the end. I was hoping that a six second lead would be enough for us to hold the lead after all the final pitstops played out, but it wasn't to be. I was initially gutted when we dropped to third, but then I saw everyone elses reaction to our team performance and I realised that we lost with honour!!"
The ACEMCO S7R eventually finished just three seconds behind the class winning car after two and a half hours of hard racing around Mosport's challenging high speed corners.
"It has been evident for a while the level that this team are now operating at, and it is very gratifying to be able to now truly challenge for the win," Mowlem said. "From the time I joined this team, Jeff Giangrande (team owner) has built a team that is now really begnning to gel. You saw that here at Mosport. Everybody on this team is working flat out. We came so close to winning!"
One of Britain's most successful and personable sports car drivers, Mowlem started his career behind the wheel at age 19. In 2004, he finished fourth in the British Racing Drivers Club Gold Star Award voting for international British racers. A married father of two, Mowlem was raised in Majorca, Spain. He has earned university degrees in economics and Spanish. More information on Mowlem is available at www.johnnymowlem.com.
