Mowlem, ACEMCO Team Ready For Mosport ALMS Race
Portland, Ore. (July 26, 2004) -- British sports car racer Johnny Mowlem and his ACEMCO Motorsports teammates produced their fifth consecutive solid run in as many races this season, finishing third in the GTS class in the Grand Prix of Portland American Le Mans Series race at Portland International Raceway.
The ACEMCO team's Saleen S7R, which Mowlem drives with Terry Borcheller, was running as high as second in class when a drive shaft issue forced them to slow their pace, and they eventually took the final podium place behind both Corvettes."
The ACEMCO team is based in Spring Lake, Mich. and is owned by Jeff Giangrande. Saleen, Inc., which is based in Irvine, Calif., built the team's Saleen S7R.
"This is a very busy stretch for the ALMS teams," said Mowlem. "We have four races between July 5 and August 8. I'm really proud of our ACEMCO team, as they've had so much work to do with this busy schedule. That we are continuing to develop the car and close the gap to the GM Corvettes, is testament to all their hard work. At one point this weekend it even looked like we were heading for second again in GTS, just like at Sears Point. I've got a good feeling about Mosport. I hope I'm right!!."
Mowlem will race in the ALMS round at Mosport International Raceway in Canada before driving a Porsche GTRSR in the 1,000 kilometer Le Mans Endurance Series race at Silverstone on Aug. 14. He'll drive for the same team that provided the car in which he swept the entire 17-race season in British Pirelli Porsche Cup competition in 1997. That stunning performance led to Mowlem winning the Gregor Grant Award
One of Britain's most successful and personable sportscar drivers, Mowlem started his career behind the wheel at age 19. In 2003, he finished fourth in the British Racing Drivers Club Gold Star Award, a ranking of all British racers competing in international series, including Formula One. A married father of two, Mowlem was raised in Majorca, Spain. He has earned university degrees in economics and Spanish. More information on Mowlem is available at www.johnnymowlem.com.
