Panoz power surge continues at Mosport with strong JML Team attack

A good night sleep in the Toronto power blackout last night proved to be the perfect preparation for the JML Team Panoz attack on round five of the 2003 American Le Mans Series at Mosport today.

Fresh from recording its first podium finish of 2003 at the last round at Trois Rivieres, both Panoz LMP-01 machines showed impressive speed in the opening practice.

The #10 Panoz LMP-01 of Olivier Beretta and David Saelens was fourth fastest today, stopping the clocks at 1:10.806.

Local hero Scott Maxwell recorded the sixth fastest time overall and fourth in the LMP900 class at 1:11.694 in the #11 car he is driving with Gunnar Jeannette.

Mosport debutantes Saelens and Jeannette were first to hit the track, spending several laps learning the circuit.

Beretta and Maxwell already intricately know the racetrack - Beretta having previously won the GTS class in the Mosport ALMS events in 1999 and 2000.

Maxwell has recorded "thousands" of laps around his local circuit since making his debut here as a 19-year-old in 1983.

The local Toronto resident yesterday showed off his hockey skills by scoring a hat trick including the winning goal in overtime to lead "Team Le Mans" to a 4-3 win over "Team Canada" in a media promotion ball hockey game on the main straight of the race track.

Track action was delayed this morning after a major power blackout plunged Toronto and much of the north east of the United States into darkness.

Olivier Beretta was actually fortunate to arrive in time - touching down from Monaco yesterday only 15 minutes before Toronto airport was shutdown due to the power failure.

OLIVIER BERETTA

"It was quite interesting to try the Panoz here at Mosport after having done so well here in the Viper a few years ago."

"The characteristics of the car are very similar although obviously the Panoz has more power and more down force as well."

"I really love this track and I think we can perform well and hopefully the traffic will be on our side."

"The track is very fast and if you catch the traffic at the wrong time, it can really hurt you on the stop watch."

"David and I are hoping to improve on our result from Trois Rivieres - taking a win will be tough, but working our way up to second place is a realistic goal."

GUNNAR JEANNETTE

"This is my first time here at Mosport, but my first laps around here were very rewarding."

"We still have a lot of work to do find some more speed but Scott has a lot of experience around here and our engineer Larry Holt is also a local so they really made some improvements during the session."

"I got back in to get a run with a few minutes remaining, but somebody blew a gearbox at the end of the session and I only got one out lap before the checkered flag came out."

"Overall, we have had a very good start to the weekend and we will see how things progress tomorrow."

DAVID SAELENS

"This is really a fantastic racetrack. I heard a lot about the track before I got here and it is a real joy to drive - I really enjoy fast circuits."

"It didn't take too long to get into a rhythm around here and after my first stint in the car I was really pleased because we were not too far off the Audi pace."

"Everything went pretty well although my ribs are still pretty sore."

"I had a bit of hard time with my ribs on the right hand side at Sears Point and it hasn't come good yet. The team has been working on the seat to try to make it more comfortable for me, but it can still be a bit painful."

SCOTT MAXWELL

"This is the first time I have driven a Panoz around here - I have probably done thousands of laps around here, but this is my first laps in this car."

"The Panoz worked quite well straight off the truck and we dialed out quite a bit of under steer during the session."

"The Michelin combinations we worked with performed really well and I think we are in very good shape so far."

"I am quite pleased with the first day. This is the first time I have been here in a prototype since 1999 and it is great to let one of these cars loose on a fast flowing circuit like this."
