Flying Lizard No. 44 Takes Team's First GT Pole; Sets New ALMS GT Lap Record in Qualifying at Mosport

Aug. 7, 2004 - BOWMANVILLE, Ont. Canada--Flying Lizard Motorsports driver Lonnie Pechnik took the team's No. 44 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR to the GT-class pole today with a lap time of 1:18.365 in the qualifying session for the Toronto Grand Prix of Mosport. In today's session, Pechnik set a new track lap record for the GT class. This is Pechnik's first career pole and the first time since 2002 that any team other than Alex Job Racing has taken the GT-class pole.

The team's No. 45 Porsche, driven by Johannes van Overbeek and Darren Law, qualified fifth in GT class today with van Overbeek at the wheel.

"The cool weather, fast track, and Michelin tires were a perfect combination for the session. The crew and engineering team once again showed their mettle and I'm proud to repay their hard work with today's performance," said Pechnik of his fast lap today at the famed Canadian course.

In the No. 45 car, van Overbeek will be joined by teammate Darren Law on Sunday. "The car is feeling good so far; we had some minor adjustments to make today during practice but overall it's performing well. Both Darren and I really enjoy this track: it's fun to drive and one of the toughest of the ALMS courses. I'm looking forward to Sunday," said van Overbeek.

Crew chief Tommy Sadler added, "It's a testament to the tremendous capabilities of the entire crew that as a new team we were able to put a car on the pole in ALMS GT, which is one of the most competitive fields this year in U.S. sports car racing."

The Toronto Grand Prix of Mosport will get the green flag at 12 noon (Eastern) on Sunday, August 8. CBS Sports will have live television coverage of the event from 1-3 p.m. (Eastern Time) and the ALMS Radio Web will have live audio coverage at www.americanlemans.com. The race will be broadcast live in Europe by MotorsTV, starting at 17:00 (UK time).
