A STAR-SPANGLED START AT MID-OHIO
To help celebrate the return of Corvette Racing and its entrance into the American Le Mans Series' GT2 class at Acura Sports Car Challenge, self- professed Corvette fanatic Dan Fastuca will perform the National Anthem during pre-race ceremonies Saturday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Fastuca, a frequent visitor to the race track, will not only perform but also give back to the community by auctioning a guitar signed by all Series competitors at Mid-Ohio.
A friend of four-time Mid-Ohio winner and three-time Series champion Ron Fellows, Fastuca will be wearing a Fellows driving suit while performing the Star-Spangled Banner. He says it's a great honor to be playing for race fans at a venue that he calls his home track.
"It's filled with people that love their cars, love their racing, and love their rock-n-roll," said Fastuca. Primarily part of a full band, he hopes his solo performance gets the race crowd just as excited as the cars do.
Like many people in the paddock, Fastuca has been affected by some form of cancer, recently losing two of his brothers and mother to the disease. The guitar he will play Saturday is signed by Fellows with proceeds going to the Mansfield Ohio Cancer Specialists Relay for Life team.
"There are so many of us out there that have been, or are currently being torn apart in one way or another by (cancer)," he said. "Raising money for organizations that help fight cancer is the very least I can do."
Auction sheets will be available at the American Le Mans Series' merchandise display in the main paddock. Fans also will have a chance to bid during the driver autograph session at noon Saturday; Fastuca will be signing posters and showing off the guitar at the American Le Mans Series' Vitesse display transporter. The winner will be presented the guitar at the conclusion of victory podium ceremonies on Saturday.
