The Racer's Group secures third place finish at Grand Prix Americas.
MIAMI-- Oct. 6, 2002-- Kevin Buckler and Brian Cunningham clinched a third place GT class podium finish at the Grand Prix Americas American Le Mans Series race on Saturday in Miami. This race marks the eighth ALMS GT class podium finish for The Racer's Group No. 66 Porsche GT3 RS and ties Buckler for fourth in the driver championship points for the season.
Buckler took the green flag to start and both he and Cunningham kept No. 66 in a strong third place during the two-hour, 45-minute race. Driving consistent lap times, the team was in the hunt for a first place finish until a track accident created track debris, causing Cunningham in No. 66 to spin in order to avoid car fragments and loosing a lap.
The Racer's Group No. 67 car driven by Michael Schrom and Vic Rice retired early on in the race due to and accident with the No. 42 Orbit Racing car.
"The car was good as a whole. The track conditions were really hard on the drive train, but that little Porsche just held on. There were no tire problems, thanks to Michelin. The team did a great job as well as my co-driver Brian. There just really wasn't any room for mistakes at this track and we proved that," Buckler said.
"This was a really difficult track to drive. I wouldn't say that I had fun in the car, though it's a beautiful venue and a great crowd. Of course we would have loved a first place finish but Alex Job just had too much force. Five podiums in five races is great. We came here to clinch the Porsche Cup title for Kevin and we did what we set out to do," Cunningham said.
This podium finish for The Racer's Group means that Buckler will be the recipient of the Porsche Cup World Champion title. He is only the fourth American to win this prestigious title. "I can't believe this means I win the Porsche Cup, it's such an honor. I need it to sink in for a couple more days to really believe it. This is a once in a lifetime experience," Buckler said of his Porsche Cup Champion title.
