BRASELTON, Ga. (October 13, 2002) Driver Jan Magnussen was the recipient of the 2002 American Le Mans Series "From the Fans" Award, a surprise honor that was announced at the series annual awards banquet Sunday night.

The award, voted on solely by fans, is presented each season to the person making the greatest contribution to sports car racing during the previous year. Magnussen, known for his aggressive and on-the-edge driving style, had originally been nominated for the excitement that he brings to the sport.

The Danish driver for Panoz Motor Sports received an overwhelming majority of the votes cast for five award finalists. The original nominating and the final voting were done through the series website at www.americanlemans.com.

Other finalists included John Hindhaugh, lead announcer for the American Le Mans Series Radio Web; Tom Kristensen, driver for Audi Sport North America; Sara Coy, webmaster for the ALMS website; and the co-founders of the Cadillac Grand Prix of Washington, D.C., George deBidart and Chris Lencheski.

Previous winners of the award were series founder Don Panoz (1999), Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, Head of Audi Sport (2000) and Gary Claudio of General Motors for the Corvette program (2001).
