de FERRAN FINDS HIS WAY IN LONG BEACH PRACTICE
Gil de Ferran made himself feel right at home in his return to Long Beach on Friday with the quickest time in the lone official practice session for Saturday's Tequila Patron American Le Mans Series at Long Beach. de Ferran posted a lap of 1:13.857 (95.926 mph) in the de Ferran Motorsports Acura ARX-02a that he will drive with Simon Pagenaud.
de Ferran won three poles at Long Beach during his CART days but his best result was fifth. The de Ferran Acura has been the overall pole winner at each of the Series' first two races at Sebring and St. Petersburg but did not finish either race.
David Brabham, driving Patron Highcroft Racing's Acura P1 entry with Scott Sharp, was second overall. The pairing were winners in P2 at Long Beach last year and won overall two weeks ago at St. Petersburg. Brabham's best lap was 1:14.288 (95.369 mph).
Adrian Fernandez went quickest in P2 for Lowe's Fernandez Racing. The Mexican star, who has the most experience at Long Beach of any Series driver, turned in a best lap of 1:14.807 (94.708 mph). He and Luis Diaz are trying to extend their class winning streak to three races.
Fernandez was 1.662 seconds quicker than Dyson Racing's Guy Smith in the Mazda-powered Lola B09/86 coupe that he will share with Chris Dyson. The second Dyson entry of Butch Leitzinger and Marino Franchitti was third in class at 1:16.819 (92.227 mph).
Corvette Racing, making its final North American start in GT1, was led by Olivier Beretta in the Corvette C6.R that he is driving with Oliver Gavin. Beretta's time of 1:18.645 (90.086 mph) gave him a 0.597-second gap over the sister car of Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen, last year's class winners.
Gavin and Beretta were GT1 victors here two years ago.
Wolf Henzler put Farnbacher Loles Racing's Porsche 911 GT3 RSR out front in GT2 at 1:21.548 (86.879 mph). Driving with Dirk Werner, Henzler led a Porsche 1-2 with a 0.299-second gap back to Flying Lizard Motorsports' Patrick Long. A native of southern California, he will drive with Jorg Bergmeister in search of a second straight class win.
One of BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team's BMW M3s was third in class with Dirk Muller posting a best time of 1:22.118 (86.276 mph) in the entry that he will share with Tommy Milner. The pairing finished second in class at St. Petersburg.
