PORSCHE DOUBLES UP IN LONG BEACH MICHELIN® GREEN X® CHALLENGE
Victories in the "race within the race" for Prototype and GT
LONG BEACH, CALIF. (April 17, 2010) - The battles in the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge were as close as on the fabled Long Beach circuit, but in the end, Porsche and a pair of northern California teams carried off both the GT and Prototype awards in America's premier environmental motorsports competition.
Matching their performance here in 2009 by taking a hard fought victory on the track and a narrow win in the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge, by going the furthest and fastest with the least environmental impact was the defending race and series champions, the Sonoma based Flying Lizard Porsche.
"It is unbelievable for us to not only win the Long Beach race but the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge, as well, by being both efficient and green," said Patrick Long, co-driver with Joerg Bergmeister of the GT category winning #45 Flying Lizard Porsche. "We are proud to be with a series, a manufacturer and team that wants to lead the fight to show that it can be cool to be green and fast."
Their victory marked the 13th time in 24 awards that the MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge winning car also won its respective class in the race.
Taking its first ever MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge award just one race after claiming the team's first American Le Mans Series class victory was the Benicia, CA based Muscle Milk Team Cytosport Porsche RS Spyder prototype team.
ABOUT THE MICHELIN® GREEN X® CHALLENGE The MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge, developed in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and SAE International is a race within the race at all 2010 American Le Mans Series events.
All ALMS entries compete with E10 ethanol blended gasoline; E85R gasoline blended ethanol, GTL (natural gas to liquid) biodiesel, E10-electric hybrid power or Iso-butanol gasoline.
Teams win by delivering the best overall performance, fuel efficiency, and smallest environmental impact throughout the race. Using a formula developed by the Argonne National Labs that includes over 30 different factors, real time standings are posted on timing and scoring screens throughout the race. The American Le Mans Series is the only series currently recognized as "Green Racing" by the U. S. Department of Energy; Environmental Protection Agency and SAE International.
The MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge trophies are presented to the respective Prototype and GT winners. The bases for the unique MICHELIN® GREEN X® Challenge trophies are made of rubber recycled from MICHELIN® GREEN X® labeled consumer tires.
