VAN DER STEUR'S RADICAL RETURN
A short distance from his Radical LMP2 prototype, Gunnar van der Steur was glowing with optimism. "So far it looks really promising," said van der Steur Racing owner and driver. "We're looking forward to pushing the season on forward."
So what if 2007 has started later for the van der Steur crew than originally thought? The independent team from Maryland missed the first five rounds due to a preseason crash in testing and an overheating problem with the engine.
"It's something that carried over from last year," van der Steur said. "It's haunted us really since Road Atlanta and Laguna. Then we started doing some early practice and it concerned us. Then we had our little shunt at Summit Point and then tested at Mid-Ohio, where we lost an engine due to overheating. Our chief engineer made a change that brought the temperatures down so we're ready."
The AER-powered Radical SR9 was one of several American Le Mans Series teams testing earlier this week, and the team is confident the results will show this weekend.
"I had my best time here ever so we're looking forward to it. Adam Pecorari had a great run and KUMHO brought us their best tire yet," van der Steur said. "I think there are a lot of people are going to be surprised. When you have factory support from both Acura and Porsche, and a little bit from Mazda, this is going to be a big challenge for us. We're not here to say we're we will win the class, but we want to be performers and do the best we can."
Round Six of the American Le Mans Series is the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix, set for 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 7 at Lime Rock Park. CBS Sports will televise the race at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 8. American Le Mans Radio will have live coverage at americanlemans.com, which also will feature IMSA Live Timing & Scoring.
