Mowlem Third in Class, Sixth Overall at Lime Rock
LIME ROCK, Conn. (July 6, 2004) -- Johnny Mowlem and the ACEMCO Motorsports team finished a combative third in the GTS class and sixth overall in the New England Grand Prix American Le Mans Series race at Lime Rock Park.
"We had another solid run, the ACEMCO team and Pirelli are doing a great job and we're definitely making progress" said Mowlem. "I feel that this is the first time that we genuinely had something to give our rivals some food for thought!"
It was a typically busy race on the tight, 1.5-mile Lime Rock venue and it was even busier than most for the popular Mowlem. He had a brief chat with SPEED Channel announcers during a green-flag portion of the race, commenting about the nature of race traffic as he darted by a GT competitor after sweeping through one of Lime Rock's high-speed corners.
"This was a hard race, mentally," said Mowlem. "You are constantly in traffic and the opportunities to pass can slip away very easily."
The ACEMCO Saleen S7R started eighth overall in the field of 27 starters. Terry Borcheller, Mowlem's co-driver, was the class leader early in the race. The race marked the third time in three ALMS races this season that the ACEMCO team has finished third in the GTS class.
Mowlem and Borcheller finished the event second in the GTS class driver standings. In the ALMS scoring system, co-drivers can earn the same number of points in an event.
The New England Grand Prix was the 50th race in ALMS history. Mowlem was one of the drivers recognized before the race as being among the starters in the first series event. Mowlem has started 30 ALMS events and has won twice.
One of Britain's most successful and personable sportscar drivers, Mowlem started his career behind the wheel at age 19. In 2003, he finished fourth in the British Racing Drivers Club Gold Star Award, a ranking of all British racers competing in international series, including Formula One. A married father of two, Mowlem was raised in Majorca, Spain. He has earned university degrees in economics and Spanish. More information on Mowlem is available at www.johnnymowlem.com.
