J3 Racing Finishes Fourth at Lime Rock
Lime Rock, Conn. - J3 Racing finished their Porsche 911 GT3 RSR is a very competitive fourth place today in round three of the American Le Mans Series race at Lime Rock Park.
Tim Sugden's Saturday qualifying effort saw him post a time of 55.127 and a speed of 100.568 mph good enough for sixth place in the GT field.
Sugden started the car in today's race and five laps into the two-hour and 45-minute event he was leading the GT class. Rain had begun to fall on the second lap, causing several cars to spin and crash. During the yellow period several of the cars in front of Sugden on the grid pitted for rains. The J3 crew kept the Leeds, England based driver out where he assumed the lead. During his stint in the car Tim lead 114 laps, pitted once for gas and no tires.
"The team made a great call to keep me out during the little shower," said Sugden. "I had a really good car and was able to run consistent lap times. We elected just to fuel and not take tires, this made the car a handful at the end of my stint but it was great to lead almost half of the race. It is hard not to be on the podium after we ran so well."
After nearly 200 miles of running up-front, Sugden handed the car over to teammate Justin Jackson. The full service on their driver change and a slow GTS car dropped the pair back in the GT field. "Tim did a great job to get the car through the rain storm and lead for most of the race. When he was about to pit and handover to me, a slow GTS car was holding us up and when he pulled onto pit road the pace car came down the hill. This put us back two laps. The car was good for my stint. I was able to run a good pace and finish in fourth. We deserved a few more positions on the finishing sheet, but after a DNF at Mid-Ohio this sends us to the West Coast with a great attitude."
J3 Racing also had the opportunity to field their number 78 Porsche for drivers Melanie Patterson and Randy Wars. The pair were experiencing engine oiling problems all race and were forced to pit several times to get the car to the end finally finishing eleventh in the GT class.
Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California will host round four of the American Le Mans Series on July 18.
