Flying Lizard Contends for GT-class Drivers' Championship in Final Round of 2004 American Le Mans Series at Laguna Seca

Oct. 13, 2004- MONTEREY, Calif.--Flying Lizard Motorsports is preparing for the final battle in the 2004 ALMS season at this weekend's finale, the Audi Sports Car Championships, Oct. 16 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The four-hour race is the Flying Lizard squad's last chance at the 2004 ALMS GT Drivers' championship. Johannes van Overbeek and Darren Law, currently second in the points chase for the Drivers' championship, will drive the Flying Lizard No. 45 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Teammates Lonnie Pechnik and Seth Neiman will reunite with Jon Fogarty in the No. 44 Porsche.

Going into the final round, the GT Drivers' championship field is down to a few contenders: van Overbeek and Law are fifteen points behind Timo Bernhard of Alex Job Racing, and 11 points ahead of Bernhards' teammate Jorg Bergmeister, currently in third. For van Overbeek and Law to win the Drivers' championship, Bernhard and Bergmeister would need to finish seventh or lower and van Overbeek and Law would need to win the race. If Bernhard and Bergmeister do not finish in the top 10, van Overbeek and Law could still clinch the championship with a first, second or third place finish.

van Overbeek said, "This weekend we'll give it everything we have. We still have a shot at the championship but it will clearly require a flawless race and a great deal of luck. The 2004 GT class has been one of the most competitive GT classes in the history of the ALMS."

Going into the race, Flying Lizard is also second in GT Team championship points. This year, which was the team's first year of racing competition, they led the GT class in both Drivers' and Team championship points for more than half of the season, the result of six podium finishes in a row from Mid-Ohio through Road America.

van Overbeek continued, "The team and crew have worked so hard this season, from our first race at Sebring to our first win at Mid-Ohio to the tremendous work at Petit Le Mans. It was disappointing at Petit to be knocked out of the running so early in the race, but I'm really proud of the team for keeping both cars in the race. We are looking forward to a great race this weekend."

Teammate Pechnik, who hails from nearby Pacific Grove, Calif. added some thoughts on the track: "Laguna Seca is one of the lowest grip tracks of the ALMS season; reaching the right car balance with the short setup time will be a challenge There are corners where the apex is slightly banked before it becomes flat on corner exit, which makes finding the right line interesting. I especially like Turn 9 and 5, which are both fast corners with elevation and camber changes. The area from the braking zone of the corkscrew--which is blind with an elevation change--to Turn 10 will be tough while the faster classes navigate the slower traffic. Add to the mix an hour of darkness and we should see an exciting race this weekend."

Audi Sports Car Championships will get the green flag at 4 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, Oct. 16. NBC will broadcast the race on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. The ALMS Radio Web will have live audio coverage at The race will also be broadcast live in Europe by MotorsTV, beginning at midnight UK Time.
