Lowe's Fernandez Racing Qualifies Fifth for ALMS Season Finale
Lowe's Fernandez Racing drivers Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz will start fifth in class and sixth overall for the American Le Mans Series season finale tomorrow at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Fernandez and Diaz were strong out of the gate on the 2.238-mile road course, claiming the top overall spot on the timesheets in two of three practice sessions leading up to qualifying this afternoon.
Fernandez, who handled qualifying duties, managed an overall lack of grip due to warmer track conditions to set the fastest time of the weekend for the #15 Lowe's Acura Lola. His lap of 71.204 seconds (113.151 mph) was 0.676 seconds (1.084 mph) shy of the pole winning time claimed by the #6 Penske Porsche of Sascha Maassen and Ryan Briscoe.
Fernandez and Diaz combine for a total of 19 starts on the hillside road course. Tomorrow's four-hour race will mark the 14th career start at Laguna Seca for Fernandez and the seventh for Diaz, who claimed victory in the 2005 Grand-Am event.
Fernandez and Diaz have piloted the #15 Lowe's Acura Lola to five top-five finishes to date this season including two podiums at Sebring (second) and Mid-Ohio (third).
Adrian Fernandez, #15 Lowe's Acura Lola:
"It was a good day overall, but obviously we wanted to qualify better. The competition was pretty tight out there in qualifying so it was fun. When we were quick [first overall in two practice sessions], the conditions were ideal for our car. Our car changes with the hot weather and, unfortunately, we had sun this afternoon which we haven't had until now. Our main problem was a lack of grip versus when it was cooler. The Lola chassis has an ideal position and it loses that when changes in conditions happen. In general, it has been good this weekend and I think we should be strong for the race."
Luis Diaz, #15 Lowe's Acura Lola:
"I am happy with the car. I think we have a very strong car for the race. We have been consistently quick but qualifying didn't indicate that because the heat always hurts our car more. If we can stay out of trouble tomorrow, I feel that we will be on the podium for sure. I think traffic will be the biggest issue. It is great to be back at Laguna Seca, especially with these cars."
