RANCHO CUCAMNOGA, CA,...After four races in six weekends, Kumho's teams in the American Le Mans Series are ready for a little rest and a chance to test.
Last Saturday's Grand Prix of Houston ended a grueling streak that saw the teams run a 12-hour race (Sebring) and three street races in six short weeks. "Sebring is notoriously tough on equipment, and it's difficult to get through street races without damage because there's little room to make mistakes," said Rudy Consolacion, motorsports manager for Kumho Tire U.S.A. "Fortunately, our teams survived the street circuits without any damage, and we're all looking forward for a chance to rest, test and prepare for the upcoming road courses."
At Houston, Intersport Racing scored its fourth consecutive podium finish in LMP1, capturing third place despite an electrical problem that nearly kept the team from scoring points. A new tire compound and some changes to the car's setup enabled the team to make big gains in qualifying and also helped the team run a race pace very close to the class-leading Audis.
In LMP2, B-K Motorsports had its best run of the year so far at Houston, qualifying within a few tenths of the other LMP2 cars and finishing ninth overall in the race.
"Intersport and B-K have both essentially been testing in public with their new cars," noted Consolacion. "Both teams will do some extensive testing at Mid-Ohio on May 3, where they'll work on different setups and try out some new Kumhos with varying compounds and constructions. We're confident this first test outside of a race weekend will give us a chance to help our teams be more competitive at Salt Lake."
Consolacion added that Kumho would do additional tire testing in June and throughout the summer.
