BRDC RACE DRIVERS RAISE £80k IN LONDON MARATHON
On Sunday 26th April, drivers from the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) raised £80,000 for charity by running the in London marathon.
Johnny Mowlem was joined by fellow drivers Andy Priaulx, Oliver Gavin, Darren Turner, Jonny Kane, Guy Smith, Richard Westbrook, Peter
Dumbreck, Marino Franchitti, Stuart Hall, Charlie Hollings, Rob Barff, Marc Hynes and Sean Edwards, as well as club secretary Stuart Pringle, all in aid of the children's' cancer charity Clic Sargent.
With the full support from the BRDC's other members, they managed to raise the princely sum of £80,000, and still counting.
"I really just wanted to take this opportunity to thank every single person that sponsored us," said Mowlem. "The generosity of some of my friends and colleagues was incredible, and that was obviously the same for my fellow runners, as demonstrated by the great amount that we raised!
"I'm also incredibly proud of all the lads. Obviously some of the boys are serious runners anyway, and Oliver Gavin in particular did a superb job to finish in the top 700 out of 36,000 runners! But all the other lads were fantastic as well, and I reckon even if they'd broken a leg they'd have all made it to the finish.
"I could see the pain that some of the boys around me were in, and I myself was in virgin territory as soon as we got past 10 miles. That lack of training over the last 3 months, I hasten to add, was not due to my laziness, but rather a torn Achilles received while playing soccer!"
As a result Mowlem hadn't even run 26 miles total in training preparation, let alone in one go.
"Sheer bloody mindedlessness and not wanting to let the charity or the other lads down kept me going. Plus the awesome support from all the Clic Sargent stations along the way, it felt like a longer version of the Le Mans driver parade, only a lot more painful!"
