European Le Mans Series Champions* Johansson Motorsports line-up on the second row of the 41-car grid for the final round of the American Le Mans Series. Stefan Johansson, of Sweden, driving a 2000-specification "customer" Audi R8, stopped the clock at 1min 11.939secs in the 30-minute qualifying section on Friday afternoon.
Johansson will be partnered in the 1,000-mile ALMS finalé tomorrow by Frenchman Patrick Lemarié, the duo having finished third in the last race at Laguna Seca. The British-based team, which concentrated on the inaugural European Le Mans Series, also claimed fourth place in the Sebring 12-hours in March. Johansson had damaged the front bodywork of his Audi R8 earlier in the day after spinning off.
Stefan Johansson (Sw): "We began testing here on Sunday and we've been consistently quick. We have concentrated on finding a good balance for the car in race trim and I believe that this has been accomplished. I managed to secure a second row start on my very last lap at the chequered flag which was good. We're looking strong and it would be great to finish the season with another podium finish."
Patrick Lemarié (F): "Testing a Formula One car is magic but I have thoroughly enjoyed my five races with Johansson Motorsports. I needed to get back to racing - something I've done since I was 12-years-old and I was missing the challenge. Johansson Motorsports is a great team and the Audi is a stunning car to drive - especially here on a beautiful track. I believe we have a good race car for tomorrow."
Mike Earle, Team Director: "We've got a fabulous race set-up . . . and very importantly for the drivers, we have a car that is comfortable for them to drive in race conditions. Our drivers and the car are capable of scoring a rostrum finish - we just need to enjoy a clean race in traffic."
