It's a Boy! Baby Hand
Joey and Natalie Hand, of Sacramento, California welcomed a new addition to their family this past Sunday, August 27. Chase Alan Hand, arrived five weeks early, weighed in at 6lbs., 2 oz., had a wheelbase of 19", and was born at 12:59am on Sunday, August 27, 2006. The child is the first for the Hands.
"Natalie had the baby shower on Saturday afternoon, but she's tough enough that she didn't tell anyone she was having contractions right in the middle of it," Joey said, "and she held it together while I was home on Friday night before the race at Infineon. She told me yesterday that she didn't want to stress me out before the race, so she just put her mind to NOT going into labor until I was gone on Saturday. She's amazingly tough and went through the whole childbirth process with no medication whatsoever.
She called me as Bryan Sellers and I were driving home from the racetrack, and told me she was headed to the hospital. I met her there thinking that we'd be headed home together that evening, but lo and behold, she went into labor and at about 1am, Chase was born! Of course, I'm very happy that Natalie and I have a new baby boy, and while I'm bummed out to be away from my family this weekend while I go race, I'm thrilled that I was able to actually be here for the birth!"
It's been a dramatic few weeks for the Hand family - word came out ahead of the Road America ALMS round that BMW was pulling its support for its American sportscar racing programs, affecting Joey's ride in the 2007 season, but he and teammate Bill Auberlen immediately claimed a strong 2nd place finish at the race in Wisconsin. Hand then led the Grand American Rolex Series GT class for a time at the Grand Prix of Sonoma on Saturday, then promptly drove home and witnessed the birth of his son.
