Munich/Jarama. After a fantastic qualifying effort, the two BMW M3 GTRs qualified first and second in the GTclass, Dirk Muller ahead of his team-mate Jorg Muller on the former Formula One circuit of Jarama.
The two cars were also fastest in theGT class in the earlier session, Dirk Muller driving the #43 car which heshares with Fredrik Ekblom from Sweden. The German lapped the 3.850-kilometrecircuit in 1min 32.868secs. Jorg Muller (D), who partners Fin JJ Lehto in the #42 BMW M3 GTR, drove his best lap in 1min 32.925secs.
BMW Motorsport Team Manager CharlyLamm comments: "I am very happy that both the drivers, Dirk and Jorg, got the best out of each car and that their lap times are so evenly matched. Now we have to focus on the best possible race preparation, not only in terms of set-up and tyres but, most importantly, with regards to reliability."
Dirk Muller: "I feel very happy for the team. They worked so damned hard and really deserved a one-two in qualifying. We are pretty confident for the race and have found a good set-up already."
Jorg Muller: "I am not so sure about the set-up yet. From my point of view we did not get the balance of our car as good as it should be. JJ and I could not really make use of the free practice on Friday due to some technical problems. Therefore we are still lacking track time to find the perfect set-up."
JJ Lehto: "I have never raced or even driven here before and did not get much track time yesterday. Jorg was happier with the car so we decided that he does the qualifying. The circuit is quite narrow but it's good to drive with our cars here."
Fredrik Ekblom: "When I took over from Dirk yesterday and went for a long stint on used tyres, but it was not easy. The track seems to be quite slippery, so it is important for the race to keep the tyres fresh. Neither Dirk nor I have driven here before. Dirk and I are used to alternate race by race who qualifies the car."
