GT Class Championship Battle Heats Up in American Le Mans Series

BRASELTON, GA - Following another hotly-contested race this past weekend at Portland International Raceway, the battle for the GT class driving championship of the American Le Mans Series continues to be hotly-contested as well.

Flying Lizard Motorsports drivers Johannes van Overbeek and Darren Law continue to lead the GT class driver standings following their second-place class finish on Sunday at Portland. The two have finished second in three consecutive races, a remarkable record of consistency, to go along with their win in late June at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Van Overbeek and Law lead the driver standings with 84 points, followed by Alex Job Racing Porsche driver Timo Bernhard with 73. Bernhard has two wins in the first five events of the ALMS season.

Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb, drivers of the other Alex Job entry, are third in the standings with 72 points. Dumas and Lieb scored their first ALMS win at teammates on Sunday at Portland.

With their fourth consecutive overall race win on Sunday, setting a new series record, Marco Werner and JJ Lehto extended their lead in the LMP1 class standings, as did GTS class winners Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell. Ian James maintained the LMP2 class point lead by finishing second at Portland though three-time race winners Clint Field and Robin Liddell have closed.

The next race for the American Le Mans Series will be the Toronto Grand Prix of Mosport at Mosport International Raceway near Toronto Aug. 6-8.
