Braselton, Ga. (June 29, 2003) - Morning warm up came early for the American Le Mans Series teams at the 2.54-mile Road Atlanta road course under overcast skies. Today's race could see rain and many teams took advantage of yesterday's showers to practice wet laps. After qualifying was canceled due to the heavy rain, the teams were pleased to take to a dry track this morning.
Johnny Herbert clocked a fast lap in the Champion Racing Audi at 1:13.943 (123.663 mph) in the LMP 900. Again, the Dyson Racing LMP 675's were fast, today the fast lap was turned by Chris Dyson in the No. 20 car. Dyson was second fastest in the morning session at 1:14.067 (123.456 mph).
Polesitter for today's race, the No. 16 Dyson Racing Lola was third overall. Butch Leitzinger's best lap was 1:14.375 (122.945 mph). The LMP 675 earned the pole position by virtue of James Weaver setting the fastest lap for the three practice sessions used to determine the pole when qualifying was canceled.
Two LMP 900s were fourth and fifth fastest in today's warm up setting up what could be a tight race between the two classes. Frank Biela in the Team Joest Audi was fourth overall this morning, followed by JML Team Panoz No. 10 driven by Oliver Beretta.
Oliver Gavin set the fast time for the GTS class in the No. 4 Corvette Racing, the team No. 3 'Vette will start on the pole today. In this morning's session, Johnny O'Connell was just off the pace set by Gavin.
The Prodrive Ferraris are in the GTS competition mix with Tomas Enge setting the best time in the No. 88, second in class in the warmup. The team No. 80 Ferrari was the fifth fastest GTS. The Team Olive Garden Ferrari was fouth in the session and will add to the tight battle in GTS.
Porsche again had the fastest three teams in practice, Alex Job Racing was again on top, this time with No. 23 with Lucas Luhr driving in the morning warmup. Zip Racing was second fastest with Andy Lally at the wheel. Timo Bernhard brought the AJR second car in with the third best time.
The two hour forty-five minute race gets underway today at 3:00 p.m.
