Auburn Hills, Mich.-The Audi Sport team took over the lead in the drivers' point championship at the "Petit Le Mans" in Atlanta and hopes to extend it at Laguna Seca for round ten of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).
After the team's fifth 1-2 finish in a row, Audi is focusing on extending its points lead in the manufacturers' and drivers' standings.
Following their victory in Atlanta, Allan McNish took over the lead in ALMS driver point standings. Co-driver Rinaldo Capello is tied for second with BMW's Jorg Mueller. Audi team mates Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro currently sit fifth and sixth in the drivers' standings. Audi is 21 points ahead of BMW in the manufacturers' points.
The 2.23-mile Laguna Seca raceway with its famed corkscrew turn will afford the Audi drivers a similar challenge as the last four races: new track for the drivers and car. The team has developed an uncanny ability to adapt the cars and the drivers to circuits that they have little or no time on.
Quotes for Laguna Seca: Allan McNish (#77): "It's good to be leading the drivers' championship, but with 25-points on offer to the winner of the next two races, the standings can have a totally different look about them come the end of the month. I love Laguna, especially the 'corkscrew'. It's an extremely fast, steep, downhill section - ride over a curb and unbalance the car and you're in big, big trouble. The Audi R8 will be ideal for this circuit."
Len Hunt, head of Audi Sport North America: "It is great to be in the lead in the drivers' and manufacturers' points championship. Laguna Seca is a wonderful circuit, and I am anxious to see our cars come through the famous corkscrew turn." <pre> Driver line-up for Laguna Seca: Rinaldo Capello/Allan McNish (#77) Emanuele Pirro/Frank Biela (#78)
