FORT WORTH, Tex. (March 4, 2001) -- The new pairing of Rinaldo Capello and Tom Kristensen co-drove an Audi R8 to victory in Sunday's American Le Mans Series Grand Prix of Texas at Texas Motor Speedway. Italy's Capello and Denmark's Kristensen scored a seven-second win in the two-hour, 45-minute sports car endurance race on the 2.324-mile circuit. The Audi R8 co-driven by Frank Biela of Germany and Emanuele Pirro finished second, followed by the Panoz LMP 07 driven by Jan Magnussen of Denmark and David Brabham of Australia. Due to pit stop strategy, Brabham found himself with an 11-second lead in the last 30 minutes of the race. However, the team was unable to stretch its fuel mileage and he was forced to pit less than 10 minutes from the checkered flag, causing him to finish 25 second behind the winner. "The crew told me with 20 minutes to go that he would have to pit," said Kristensen, who was in the winning car for the final stint. "With about 12 minutes to go, I asked them again because I wasn't sure." The GTS class was won by the Chevrolet Corvette C5-R co-driven by Johnny O'Connell of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Ron Fellows of Canada. The car finished seventh overall. The car finished two laps ahead of the Dodge Viper GTS-R co-driven by Terry Borcheller and Erik Messley. Lucas Luhr of Monaco and Sascha Maassen of Germany co-drove a Porsche 911 GT3 RS to victory in the GT class, finishing eighth overall. There were several minor spins and collisions during the race, but the only serious incident occurred when the Corvette driven by Kelly Collins impacted the main stretch wall after a tire went flat. Although the car suffered heavy damage, Collins was not injured. The next race for the American Le Mans Series will be the Superflo 12 Hours At Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway on March 17.
