Braselton, GA (June 27, 2003) - Frank Biela clocked a lap at 1:13.041 (125.190 mph) in the No. 1 LMP 900 Infineon Team Joest Audi R8 in today's test session at Road Atlanta.
The second round of the American Le Mans Series officially got underway at 12:30 p.m. Friday. The event was added to the schedule in March after both Mexico City and Washington D.C. events were canceled.
Many of the ALMS teams have just returned from the Le Mans 24 Hours race. Today was a shakedown day. Second fastest in the session was J.J. Lehto in the Champion Racing ADT Audi R8. Lehto's best lap was 1:13.149 (125.005 mph).
Third fastest in the session, first in the LMP 675 class, was James Weaver. Driving in one of the two Dyson Racing Team's Lola EX257/AER MG, Weaver hit a time of 1:13.322 (124.710 mph).
Weaver's teammate Chris Dyson was fourth for the session at 1:13.976 (123.608 mph).
Mad Max Papis who just returned full-time to the CART Champ Car Series, continues do drive for JML Team Panoz when available. Papis placed the Panoz LMP01/EPP in the fifth overall, third in the LMP 900 class with a time of 1:14.316 (123.042 mph).
Rounding out the top ten LMP 900's and 675's were: Doran Lista Racing Dallara, JML Team Panoz's No. 11, Intersport Racing Lola B2K/10/MG, American Spirit Racing Riley&Scott MKIII, and Team Bucknum Racing Pilbeam MP91/Willman 6.
The GTS class fast driver was Canadian Ron Fellows for the Corvette Racing team. Fellows' best lap was 1:20.940 (112.973n mph). Prodrive Ferrari was second and third in today's session.
Jorg Bergmeister in the Alex Job Racing Porsche was fastest for the GTs. Bergmeister turned a lap at 1:25.370 (107.110 mph). Second for the group was the No. 23 team car followed by The Racer's Group No. 66 Porsche.
The Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta gets underway Saturday at 9:00 a.m. with the ALMS cars taking to the track for official practice. Tickets may be purchased at the gate. The 2.540-mile track is located in scenic Braselton, Georgia.
Track activity starts at 8:00 a.m. with the Star Mazda Series. The other support series include the SCCA Speed World Challenge and the Panoz GT Pro Series.
