INDIANAPOLIS (March 16, 2001) -- Fans of historic sports cars will have three opportunities later this year to see famous cars of the past in action prior to American Le Mans Series races thanks to a new alliance. The Historic IMSA GTP Series, launched by ALMS founder Don Panoz, will run events for historic Prototype sports cars in conjunction with three ALMS races this year. The events will be operated by Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) as part of a new partnership with the ALMS. The races will be held in conjunction with ALMS events at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. (July 22); Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif. (Sep. 9) and the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta (Oct. 6). Historic IMSA GTP Series races will be one-hour timed events, with the races to be run on the same day as and just prior to the ALMS race. Practice and qualifying will be held on days leading up to race day. Already confirmed for all three races is Hotchkis Racing, a team that competed in the old IMSA GTP Series and is a regular in HSR events. The team will field a Porsche 962 and a Chevrolet Spice for drivers John Hotchkis Sr. and Jr. and Jim Adams. Other confirmed cars for the Historic IMSA GTP Series are the 1988 IMSA GTP championship-winning Nissan GTP/ZX Turbo and Chevrolet Intrepid. More entries will be announced closer to the events. "We are very pleased to be associated with Historic Sportscar Racing," said Scott Atherton, President and COO of the Panoz Motor Sports Group, which includes the ALMS and the Historic IMSA GTP Series. "HSR is the recognized leader in historic racing and these races are going to be a tremendous addition to race weekend for the American Le Mans Series. These cars are what defined sports cars in the 80's and early 90's and we are thrilled to be working with HSR to bring back some fond memories for many of our fans." "We look forward to being part of American Le Mans Series weekends at three great racing venues," said Joe Pendergast, Vice-President and Competition Director of HSR. "Race fans love to see our cars on the track, and our race teams enjoy opportunities to showcase their treasured race cars. It's a win-win for everyone."
