Childress confirms Harvick’s last season with RCR

Team owner Richard Childress confirmed that indeed his long-time driver was making the change.

Following up on the earlier rumors that Kevin Harvick would move to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014 ended up -- as expected -- being confirmed. However it was not Harvick or Tony Stewart who made the announcement in Charlotte, NC late yesterday. It was Harvick’s current team owner, Richard Childress.

On November 10th, followed up on the then rumor that Kevin Harvick would join Stewart-Hass Racing in 2014. Many expected a few years ago that the two friends would eventually be teammates, and as of 2014, they will be.

At the end of this season, Harvick will leave Richard Childress Racing after 13 years. Seems odd to even realize the length of time he has spent with RCR. "I think him and Tony will have a good relationship,” said Childress.

There was no hidden agenda by Stewart and Harvick; especially since many expected that eventually Harvick would race for SHR after Stewart formed his own team. Both RCR and SHR contest the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and both have been rivals for race victories and the Sprint Cup championship.

Stewart took the title in 2011 and while he was one of the top contenders, Harvick was struggling. Ironically he broke his winless streak at Phoenix after he had spoken with Childress on his future plans.

"We had a meeting and he told me his plans and we discussed what we were going to do in '13," explained Childress. "He'll do well over there at Stewart-Haas, and RCR will keep going and moving forward.”

Now both Chevrolet teams will move ahead as they focus on the challenge for the 2013 championship. The rivalry continues on the track but the friendship continues between Childress, Harvick and Stewart but rest assured the two drivers will battle it out not just this year, but next year also even as teammates.

Now one wonders who will replace Kevin Harvick in 2014.

Last but not least is the question concerning Ryan Newman. There was a delay in renewing his 2013 contract and a lot of rumors at that time. Will Newman stay with SHR in 2014 or move on? Stewart has already stated that his team can field four Cup cars.
