Arrest warrant issued for Vijay Mallya

An Indian court on Friday issued a non-bailable warrant against business tycoon Vijay Mallya and five others in a cheque bounce case.

The 13th metropolitan sessions court issued the warrant against crisis-hit Kingfisher airlines in a case filed by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, which manages the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here.

The court issued the warrant after Mallaya failed to appear despite summons issued to him. The liquor baron and Formula 1 team owner reportedly sought exemption from personal appearance as he was abroad.

Kingfisher had issued cheques to GHIAL towards airport user charges which include parking, landing and navigation charges for 100 million rupees (1.9 million dollars)

How this will impact Force India is still to be determined. There has been no official response from Vijay Mallya at this time, but it is safe to say he must be very worried at the prospect of spending time in jail instead of cruising aboard the Indian Princess.

We will continue to update this story as new details emerge.
