Asia Racing Team driver shines in A1 GP
Asia Racing Team (ART) Motorsports 2007 Swiss driver Alexandre Imperatori was one of the biggest surprises of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport event at Zhuhai International Circuit at China. In the A1 GP rookie sessions, Alexandre Imperatori drove for the first time the A1 Team Switzerland car, and was able to complete 14 laps with a 5th best lap time (1m24s400).
ART two times Asian Formula Renault 2.0 runner-up did a solid job for someone who had never touched the wheel of such a powerful car before. On Friday he was just one tenth (0,1 sec.) slower than experienced Switzerland number one driver Neel Jani with new tyres. In the end of the day A1 Team Switzerland Max Welti was unsurprisingly pleased with the work that ART driver achieved, and he was not the only one!
Reflecting on the past two seasons driver performance, ART Team Manager Philippe Descombes held: "I did not expect less from Alex. He just proved that he has the talent to race at this level. In less than 20 laps he got used to a car with 550 BHP, and that's not easy! The lap times showed that he was on the pace. Especially after being told by the team to not push too hard and take it easy. I hope he will keep testing with A1 Team Switzerland because he deserves the chance".
But ART Team Manager had more reasons to be happy this weekend. His long-time protege Franky Congfu Cheng who was coached by Philippe Descombes when he got pickup by McLaren Mercedes Junior Team in 2003 - got the first podium for A1 Team China in the home circuit. "It was great to see and work with him again. We went together around the circuit on Wednesday before the race weekend to "refresh" his thoughts about the track. According to his performance in the weekend, it paid off. Franky is one of those drivers that got the talent and the head to reach the top of motorsport. Hopefully one day he will get the right management to achieve it."
Asia Racing Team (ART) Motorsports will keep working hard to show the motorsport world that our team can create top drivers in China.
