SALVADOR DURAN ALMOST ON POLE!
In an exciting qualifying session, Duran had a great performance in A1GP
ZANDVOORT, the Netherlands (September 30, 2006) - Today, here, Salvador Duran was almost on pole after a great performance during qualifying sessions for the first race of the A1 Grand Prix season at the 4.18-Km. - 2.6-mile Circuit Park Zandvoort, when he was second and thus securing his starting spot from the front row for the Sprint race.
About his performance during the day, the A1 Team Mexico driver said: "During practice session in the morning I have just gone out to test the car. The team did an excellent job; they really did it with their hearts. I felt very comfortable with the car. The team always gave me a car in perfect conditions and for the first qualifying session I went out with the new tyres we have saved and I was very fast. Everything went very well; I was first with a time of 1'28.504. In the second segment we came out with the same set of tyres and did a similar time than the one in the first session (1'28.572), so I have realised the track was faster and although I have spent most of the time in first place, at the end I was fourth."
The Mexican driver added: "In the third qualifying session, I missed my braking point once and maybe that cost us the first position. I was fourth with a time of 1'28:966. In the last session, we were on pole most of the time with a lap time of 1'27.670, but in the last seconds when South Africa (Adrian Zaugg - 1'27.349) went out, they took the pole away from us."
"I am delighted and want to thank my sponsors, mainly Escuderia Telmex and above all, Jimmy (Morales), because despite having a difficult British Formula 3 season they continued supporting me. I do all of this for them, to pay back with results all the confidence they gave me. Thanks to them I am where I am," he said.
"Of course, I can not forget to mention Julio Jauregui and thank everybody in the A1 Team Mexico for giving me the opportunity to drive the car again and be their official driver. Their support has been definitely priceless," he added.
The A1 Team Mexico test driver Sergio Perez, commented on his team-mate's performance: "He did a very good job. 'Chava' (Salvador Duran) had a good qualifying session, was very consistent and was much focused. Very precise. I knew he could get the pole position. I am very proud of him. He gave everything on the track and he can feel very satisfied. Tomorrow you can expect a podium finish or a victory."
