FAST TRACK TO FORMULA 1
Jonathan Summerton was excited when the A1GP USA Team asked him to test drive for them at Zandvoort and Brunn this season. Jonathan has been chosen to be a rookie test driver for the USA team, a FAST TRACK of less than 3 years from first sitting in a race car to A1GP.
Jonathan had his first drive less than 3 years ago with Skip Barber on October 31, 2003, his first time in a car as a driver. Since then he has rapidly advanced. A couple of races later he won the Daytona Skip Barber event. From there he went to Valencia and came back with the Formula BMW Scholarship for the BMW USA series 2004. Here, he won several races, set many track records and became the youngest driver to ever win at Indianapolis. Jonathan finished the year as top American and third overall.
In 2005 he went to the more challenging Formula BMW German championship where he learnt the tracks while finishing in the top ten with a podium at the world famous Spa Francorchamps track. He alone decided to advance rather than stay for another year, where he could show well, and entered into the most competitive series in the world, the 2006 Formula 3 Euro series. In this series there are many experienced champions from other world series all out to prove themselves, many being in their second and third years in the series. Jonathan has become the talk of the paddock, as a rookie qualifying regularly in the top 5, many times within a few hundreds of a second of the pole. In the races he has shown his speed and competitiveness, with several top five finishes. Jonathan's speed and race mentality are now paying off with Jonathan being offered several options for 2007 including the opportunity to represent the USA in the A1GP series as a test driver.
Asked to comment on the A1GP USA team Jonathan said, "It will be a privilege and honor to represent the USA racing against the other countries teams. I hope that our team can prove we are the best and have some great results. I look forward to learning as much as possible and doing my best, although I have yet to sit in the car. I am sure this opportunity will help me find sponsors for next year and prepare me for Formula 1."
