Proton, through its wholly owned subsidiary company, Proton Marketing Sdn Bhd ("PMSB") has entered into an Memorandum of Understanding with A1 Grand Prix (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (A1GPM").
PMSB was represented by Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohd Tahir, Managing Director of Proton Holdings Berhad, while Jack Cunningham, the team principal of A1GPM, signed on behalf of A1 GP.
Commenting on the sponsorship, Syed Zainal said that the company followed closely the progress of A1 Team Malaysia and saw sponsorship as an excellent avenue for Proton to reach an international audience as well as participate in a recognized global motor sport.
"The sponsorship will allow us to play our role in promoting Malaysia as well as the Proton brand to global spectators all year round.
"At the same time, this sponsorship gives us access to valuable skills and experience in the areas of professional race team logistics, support, promotion, as well as management know-how.
"The partnership with A1 Team Malaysia including the drivers, mechanics and supporting members, adds value to Proton's core business and products," said Syed Zainal.
Jack Cunningham, team principal of A1 Team Malaysia said he was delighted to be taking this first step with Proton in the development of a long term relationship that will encompass technical and branding opportunities.
"Our new partner Proton has had the vision to see the strengths of the A1 Grand Prix platform and recognizes the excellent branding opportunity that A1 Team Malaysia represents for Malaysian companies to reach an international audience," added Cunningham.
A1 Team Malaysia, led by its drivers Alex Yoong and Fairuz Fauzy over the last six rounds, is currently placed ninth from 22 teams competing in the overall championships.
A1 Grand Prix is a motor sport that allows nations to compete on a level playing field. It is a series where technology and innovation are deliberately equalized and performance is determined by skill and passion. Team and driver combine to create their advantage and the winning nation raises its flag in celebration.
