CHENG CONG FU UNLUCKILY NOT SCORED POINTS IN A1 NEW ZEALAND RACE
A1 GP, the much anticipated race was held over the weekend of the 19th and 20th of January at Taupo Circuit, New Zealand. China Team unluckily didn't enter in TOP10, made a pause of achieving points in the passed 3 races since Czech to Zhuhai.
Terrible weather with gales and sand overblown, first time visiting this circuit, these had a serious impact on the driver's performance, the grid positions for the sprint and feature race respectively were only 16th and 17th, which were the most miserable results of A1 China Team from the very beginning of 2007/08 season.
In the Sprint race, Cheng Cong Fu finished the race by 14th, without points, influenced by the unfavourable grip position and several collisions and accidents ahead at the first corner. But he made his best time 1'05''891 when only two laps left, which was the 4th overall and only 0.151 second slower compared with Germany's fastest lap time. This showed China Team's power and also promoted the whole team's confidence in achieving points in afternoon's feature race.
The situation got confused from the very beginning of feature race. Just as happened in the sprint race, accidents and collisions continued, safety cared appeared twice in only 5 laps. Cheng got to the 12th position without any difficulty. With a very short first pit stop of China Team, Cheng climbed to 9th. After third time of safe car's appearance, nobody made overtaking except New Zealand as the host. When finishing the second pit stop, Cheng successfully overtook South Africa driver. Unfortunately, Cheng didn't finish the race because of problem with left front swing, at that time, with his 7th position he was well secured in the point zone.
As to the 4 points possibly could be gained, Cheng Cong Fu felt very sad. "No matter how much disappointed I am, this is the race, anything could take place. I had tried my best each lap, although without favourable results, we had devoted ourselves." This race's dropping out means a pause of achieving points in the passed 3 races since Czech to Zhuhai. China Team was caught by India Team, both rank 9th with same points. But Cheng preferred to concentrate on the next race." Unfavourable grid positions had influenced the final results, but from now, New Zealand is in the past, the only thing we can do is to focus on the coming Australia race, I will always trust and be fully confident in our team, we can do better."
The next race of A1GP will be held in Sydney in Australia on February 3rd, 2008, which is going to be a brand-new challenge for Cheng Cong Fu again.
