A1 TEAM MALAYSIA DOMINATES CHINA TO FINISH 5TH IN WORLD CUP OF MOTORSPORT
A1 Team Malaysia took a convincing first win in the Sprint race at the A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Shanghai, China event today, and followed this with a second place finish in the Feature race.
A dominant performance by Alex Yoong, driving for his country, gave the team a welcome victory in the Sprint race. The team celebrated their first pole position yesterday with Yoong posting the fastest qualifying time of the session and then followed up with a flag-to-flag win in the first race of the day. Adding a second place finish in the Feature race gave A1 Team Malaysia its best weekend of the A1 Grand Prix season.
With a clear track ahead for the rolling start of the sprint race, Yoong led the field away, and while Malaysia's rivals behind fought for second place, Yoong was able to pull away and stamp his authority over his rivals. Driving a copybook race, the Malaysian driver pulled away from the rest of the field, crossing the line over nine seconds ahead of second placed Great Britain.
In the Feature race Yoong was the first car to the first corner but, as the opening lap progressed, a hard-charging Czech Republic slipped through into the lead. Yoong followed close behind but was unable to regain position. His race pace was unmatched by any other teams, leaving him to run in clean air and chase after the lead car, but at the end of the 30 laps, Yoong was happy to be lying second.
Yoong said after the day's racing, "The car was good today, we managed to conserve our tyres and were able to push hard throughout the Sprint race. We ran well in the Feature race as well, but just weren't able to hold off the Czech car. I'm very pleased that I've been able to repay all the A1 Team Malaysia efforts this year with a victory in our first year of competition. It's a fantastic way to end the season and really gives us so much confidence for the future. I know how much this will mean to everyone at home in Malaysia, and I'm very proud to be winning for my country in A1 Grand Prix."
Jack Cunningham, Team Principal, A1 Team Malaysia, added, "This has really been the icing on the cake for us today. We had our first pole yesterday, and then went one better with a 1-2 finish in today's races. We couldn't have asked for more from the team.
Everyone at A1 Team Malaysia should be proud of their achievements - it has been the quality of our teamwork that has given us the edge and put us at the top today. We finish the first season of A1 Grand Prix in 5th place overall with these great results which will carry us through the summer until we return to racing later this year."
The 2005/06 season of A1 Grand Prix racing has visited 11 venues around the world, with 10 races staged at international race circuits and one race on the streets of Durban, and an international field of teams. The 2006/07 season will open with the A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Zandvoort, Netherlands, from 30 September -- 2 October, and conclude in Spring 2007.
