Carpentier 11th fastest

Team Canada's Patrick Carpentier just missed out on a top-ten grid slot as qualifying unfolded today at the Shanghai International Circuit for Round 11 of the A1 Grand Prix of Nations, the final round of the 'World Cup of Motorsport'.

Setting the 11th fastest aggregate time over the four 15- minute sessions Carpentier enjoyed his strongest qualifying effort to-date in his third consecutive start with the Canadian team. Up with the pace-setters yesterday, this morning's final practice session saw Patrick record the fourth fastest time heading into this afternoon's qualifying run.

Straight out on fresh tires the 34-year-old from Quebec set the fifth fastest time with a 1m53.289s lap round the 5.45km track. He bettered that next time out with a 1m52.965s and those times combined kept him tenth overall heading into the fourth and final session but a spin would deny Patrick one last chance to improve his time. A1 Team Malaysia claimed their first ever A1GP pole position with ex-F1racer Alex Yoong driving.

Patrick Carpentier: "I'm disappointed to have missed out on the top-ten but it's a definite improvement from my previous qualifying efforts -- there are fewer cars for me to try and pass for starters! We seem to have a slight issue with tires in as much as my fastest times during the day have been set on used rubber, we'll look into that one before tomorrow. I didn't get the opportunity to set a time in the fourth session as I spun out but I'll be out working hard in tomorrow's Sprint race to get a better start position for the Feature!"
