A1 Team Great Britain put in a solid qualifying performance today despite very difficult conditions this weekend in Malaysia. The heat and humidity weren't the only weather conditions that hampered qualifying attempts. A thunderstorm brought rain to the track at the start of the second segment, just as most teams were trying to get in a dry run before the downpour.
Robbie Kerr driving for A1Team.GBR had put in a fast time in segment one to lie in fourth and then in the half-wet session he controlled the car to bring it back without a mistake in the wet on dry tyres to hold his fourth place, equaling Britain's best qualifying position so far.
Robbie Kerr. "Session one was quite good. We went out fairly late-on. Didn't get a clear lap because I had to overtake Australia just after turns seven and eight so that put me off the pace a bit. Got a good lap together apart from a slight mistake in the last sector that cost a couple of tenths and maybe cost us a place on the grid so I'm a little disappointed about that. It started to spit and everyone went out together. Unfortunately I was about to start my lap and the cars in front slowed down so I had to back right off to give myself a clear lap. Then I went for it.
"It was spitting with rain about half way round and again coming into turns seven and eight someone had spun off so we had to ease off and be cautious but got a good solid rest of the lap together. A reasonable lap time. France went out just behind us in segment two and went slower so the greasiness showed. Fourth is a good place to start -- we can do something from there -- we've just got to wait and see what happens to the weather."
