A1 Team Switzerland takes two podiums in Monterrey

26 February, Monterrey (Mexico) A1 Team Switzerland driver Neel Jani claimed two more podiums in his final event this season in Mexico. Switzerland finished the sprint race in a strong second position, less than a second behind France and finished third in the feature race scoring a total of 17 points. The team has finished on the podium eleven times this season.

It was an exciting start for A1 Team Switzerland from the front row of the sprint race after pole-sitter A1 South Africa was penalised for a technical infringement and relegated to third. The race in Mexico was Neel Jani's last appearance this season as he will now take up driving responsibilities with Formula One team Scuderia Toro Rosso. The team thanked Jani for his hard work this season with a giant "good bye and thank you Neel" banner on the starting grid.

"It was a tough first race," Jani said. "I didn't push too much because it was important to have a good position for the feature race, but I made sure to keep France under pressure until the end, hoping he would make a mistake, but I had to be happy with second.

"We were as strong in the feature race I had a clean start and kept second place. I took my pit stop at the end of lap five with 31 laps to go. It was a crucial pitstop and I got out of the pit lane just behind France but Holland was flying and got between me and France. In the second half of the race I started to close the gap to the leaders but it was too late. I'm sad that this is my last race in A1 Grand Prix but happy with the job we have done so far, scoring 121 points and having learned a lot over the winter. I'm really proud to have achieved such a good result for my country."

Max Welti, team principal, A1 Team Switzerland commented: "The sprint race was the result of excellent teamwork. The car was set-up well and finishing in second set us up with a good chance in the feature race. I would like to congratulate Neel Jani for scoring another two podiums today. It's a truly remarkable achievement to have taken eleven podiums this season."

A1 Team Switzerland is still second in the championship with 121 points ahead of Great Britain (73 points) and Brazil (70 points). The next round will be staged at Laguna Seca, California, USA - Mar 12, 2006 where Giorgio Mondini is the nominated driver.
