Patrick Friesacher has become the latest driver with Formula 1 experience to join the A1 Grand Prix series.

The 25-year-old Austrian - who raced for Minardi last year, finishing sixth in the United States GP - will make his debut for A1 Team Austria in this weekend's A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Monterrey. He is standing in for regular driver Mathias Lauda who has had to stand down due to testing commitments ahead of the 2006 DTM series.

Patrick's first acquaintance with A1 Grand Prix will come on Friday when he will venture out onto the Fundidora Park circuit for the two one-hour free practice sessions.

"I'm really looking forward to racing for the Austrian Team," said the former Formula 3000 race winner, "and I'm really happy to have the chance to compete again. The A1GP series has developed well over the past few races. At the moment, I can't really comment what will happen, as I haven't driven the car yet."

A1 Team Austria's best finish in the opening eight rounds is seventh place, achieved both in the Feature race in Dubai and again in the Feature race in South Africa.
